An NHS Health check is a free health assessment offered to eligible adults in England.
It is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.
The check helps you understand your health risks and make simple lifestyle changes to reduce them.
You’re eligible for a free NHS Health check if you:
Are aged 40 to 74
Do not have a pre-existing condition such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure
Are registered with a GP in England
You will usually receive an invitation from your GP or local pharmacy when it’s time for your check.
The check takes about 20 to 30 minutes and includes:
A few simple questions about your lifestyle and family medical history
Measurements of your height, weight, age, gender, blood pressure and cholesterol
A small blood test (usually a quick finger-prick)
A discussion of your results and practical advice to improve or maintain your health
You will be invited for a free NHS Health check every 5 years if you remain eligible.
